Why can harmful noise cause permanent hearing damage?

Every day, if we hear sounds that are too loud, cells in our inner ear can be damaged. This is known as noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL).

These cells, called hair cells, are tiny sensory cells that convert sound waves into electrical signals to brain. Once damaged, hair cells can never grow back.

Therefore, without further protection, hearing loss in life time will only get worse after it happens.
