How is sound level measured on iPhone?

When the front of iPhone is facing you, its microphone is located at bottom.

In order to measure sound level most accurately, instructions are:

(1) Open SoundMeter+;

(2) Hold iPhone so that its bottom is closest to the sound source;

(3) Best distance from its bottom to the source is 10mm;

(4) Read the number on "Average Level" Panel. This number is the measured sound level.

In order to measure a sound most accurately, instructions are:

(1) Open SoundMeter+;

(2) Hold iPad so that its top center is close to the sound source;

(3) Best distance from its top center to the source is 10mm;

(4) Read the number on "Average Level" Panel. This number is the measured sound level.

When the front of iPod Touch is facing you, its microphone is a small hole located at top right on the back. It is adjacent to camera hole.

In order to measure a sound most accurately, instructions are:

(1) Open SoundMeter+;

(2) Hold iPod Touch so that its microphone hole is close to the sound source;

(3) Best distance from its microphone hole to the source is 10mm;

(4) Read the number on "Average Level" Panel. This number is the measured sound level.

Similarly, if using other Apple devices, please always point microphone close to the source while measuring.

 

 

How to calibrate speakers and home theaters?

With SoundMeter+, you can use either of the follow two methods.

(1) Method 1: Spectrum Analysis

Go to www.auralware.com. Download white noise from there. Play it through your speaker system. Adjust your equalizer until the sound spectrum on SoundMeter+ becomes flat.

(2) Method 2: Sound Pressure Level

Select "Z" weighting on SoundMeter+. Go to www.auralware.com and download a set of pure-tones. Play them one by one through your speaker system. Observe their sound levels on SoundMeter+. Adjust your equalizer to make their levels equal.
